Bring your own ice chest to get it home since you can't carry it with your bare hands. Before they stocked it, I looked up a local ice supply company & bought from them. The supply companies usually aren't open on weekends, so buy your dry ice Friday afternoon & keep it in a well-sealed ice chest in as large pieces as possible to last 24-36 hours. It is sold in approx 10-lb slabs, and I find that 2 or 3 slabs are plenty for my party plus decoration photo shoot the next day. Do NOT put it in your home freezer since you can ruin it! The spice ball has very tiny holes, so the chunks of dry ice dissolve into fog before they are ever small enough to come through those tiny holes. The fog comes through the holes just fine, and that's why it's safe. Depending how large a spice ball you can find, a 2-3" ball full of dry ice should last about 15 minutes or so. I usually do one or two refills throughout the evening unless a guest volunteers for dry ice duty. I love it when that happens! Make sure you have the right tools for them (hammer, icepick, wood board, gloves, plastic bowl) and that they know proper dry ice handling procedure. Yes, alcohol works fine in the punches! All that is happening is carbon dioxide fog is released into your punch, no different than adding carbonated sodas. Check out my Halloween Recipes page for a couple alcoholic Witches Brews, and those have all been successful with dry ice. :) The main dry ice chapter is in the original Eerie Elegance book, but there are a ton of totally different ideas in the new Enhanced Eerie Elegance too! Have a fabulous party this weekend! Thanks so much for all of your awesome Halloween ideas! I'm going to use so many of them for my Halloween party this Saturday. I'd love to do the sherbert punch, but I have a few questions... 1. Where do I buy dry ice? 2. by putting it in that spice ball, won't some of the dry ice come out and go into the punch? 3. how long does the 'creepy' effect last? 4. have you made this receipe or others with alcohol? Is it safe to put alcohol in the punch with the dry ice? Thanks so much! I'm going to buy your book for next year's planning! This is for this Saturday's party! paula Hi Britta.
